From spring to fall, the city's surrounding area is a magnificent place to go hiking. Picturesque trails beckon from right by the landmark mountain of Annaberg-Buchholz, the Pöhlberg.
In the wintertime, the landscape atop the Ore Mountains is especially attractive. Snow conditions permitting, it is possible to take prolonged ski trips starting in the Annaberg-Buchholz area, going up to the Fichtelberg area, and over the border to the Czech Republic. The ski regions of Fichtelberg and Keilberg (Klinovec, Czech Republic) as well as the many smaller tracks in the area are all conducive to alpine ski sports. During the months of January and February, an ice skating rink is set up right in the middle of the Annaberg market square. There is a sledding hill on the Pöhlberg.
